Tips for a Successful Pregnancy Portrait Photoshoot

Maternity portraits have certainly come of age over the last decade or so, thanks to the good ol' celebrity (think Demi Moore and co).  Gone are the days when women were expected to hide their pregnancy.  More and more women are choosing the embrace this very special time in their lives and document it with some pregnancy portraits...and rightly so!  A pregnant lady certainly makes a beautiful image.

A lot of people ask me when they should get their pregnancy portraits done.  Personally, I think the best time is around the seventh month or so.  At this stage, your belly is beautifully rounded and you are still comfortable enough to move around.

So here I have compiled some tips to help you make the most of your Pregnancy Portrait session with me.

On the day of the photo session, try not to wear any tight fitting underwear or clothing as it does tend to leave marks on your skin which take a few hours to go away after you remove  the clothing.  In fact, I would go as far as saying, wear a loose dress (think kaftan style) and no underwear at all!  If this really makes you feel a little self conscious, perhaps try to take off any tight underwear or clothing a few hours prior to the session.

Any clothes that you wear in your photo session should fit snugly to your body to emphasise that beautiful belly.  Big shirts or other loose clothing will only hide your bump and make you look larger than you are.  I provide draping fabric to sweep elegantly around you so if you don’t want to be topless in front of me, please bring a flesh coloured strapless bra, which we can place the fabric over and tuck into.  Some ladies also bring along their comfy bathrobe so they can cover themselves during lighting changes.

Any clothes that you do bring along, please keep them plain and simple.  Plain colours are a must.  Avoid things like busy patterns, spots and strips, and any clothing with writing or pictures on it.

Please remember that I am the only photographer in the room.  There are no males present (apart from your partners if you bring them along).

If you are planning on bringing your partner along to have some photos done too, please go ver his wardrobe and choose some clothing (such as simple black jeans or pants) to bring along.  Avoid big belt buckle (which can reflect light) and again, patterned or sloganed shirts. And despite him insisting that purple and brown and yellow look great together, do not under any circumstances allow him to wear it!  Plain colours like white, beige and black tend to work well in maternity portraits.

Sometimes, clients find it hard to describe what kind of photos they want.  I encourage you to scour the internet and find images that you like, print them and bring them along so we can be on the same wavelength.  One person’s ides of a “romantic” shot can totally differ to another’s version of it.
